How Jamaica's ports compare

Jamaica’s three ports are close together on the north coast but behave quite differently once a group is ashore. Ocho Rios and Falmouth put you at the edge of a real town on foot. Montego Bay does not — its berth sits in a commercial freeport several kilometres from anything, so a vehicle is mandatory.

Falmouth is the port built for scale: it was dredged in 2011 specifically to take the largest ships afloat, which is why very large vessels call there rather than at Montego Bay. It also has the best-preserved Georgian townscape in the Caribbean sitting immediately outside the terminal gates, which almost nobody walks out to see.

Choosing between them for a group usually comes down to the excursion. Dunn’s River Falls is closest to Ocho Rios; the Luminous Lagoon needs a late departure from Falmouth; and Montego Bay is the only one of the three where flying in or out around the sailing is practical, with the airport about 6 km from the berth.
