How Belize's ports compare

Belize gives a group a genuine choice between two very different days, and the difference is mostly about how long you spend on a boat. Belize City is a long-tender port: the harbour is too shallow for large ships, so tenders run 20 to 30 minutes each way and an hour of the day disappears into the transfer. Harvest Caye, further south, has a deep-water pier and no tender at all.

That trade-off maps cleanly onto what each place offers. Belize City is the gateway to the things Belize is actually known for — cave tubing at Nohoch Che’en, the Maya sites at Altun Ha and Lamanai, and the barrier reef. Harvest Caye is a controlled resort island with a beach, a lagoon and cabanas, and is not really Belize at all unless you book a mainland transfer.

For a large mixed-age group the honest split is this: Harvest Caye is the easier day by a wide margin, and Belize City is the better one. English is the official language in both, which makes either straightforward to navigate independently.
