About St. Thomas

St. Thomas is a United States territory, which removes a layer of friction that matters to a group. US citizens need no passport for a closed-loop cruise, US dollars are the currency, US mobile plans usually work without roaming charges, and US federal law applies. For a large family group this is the simplest day of most Eastern Caribbean weeks.

Charlotte Amalie was a Danish colonial free port, and the warehouse buildings along Main Street — narrow alleys running between the street and the waterfront — are now the densest concentration of duty-free retail in the Caribbean. Whether that appeals depends entirely on your group, but it means a shore day needs no planning at all.

Magens Bay is the island’s signature beach: a deep, sheltered horseshoe on the north coast, about 15 minutes over the ridge by taxi. It is calm enough for young children and there is a small entry fee.

The better day, for groups that want scenery over shops, is the ferry to St. John. Two-thirds of that island is the Virgin Islands National Park, and Trunk Bay is a National Park beach with a marked underwater snorkel trail. It takes most of the port call and is worth it.

How ships berth here

Two berths serve the island: Havensight, about 2 km east of town, and Crown Bay, about 3 km west. Both are walk-off. When more than two large ships call, later arrivals may anchor and tender into Charlotte Amalie.

Access and mobility

Both berths are step-free. Charlotte Amalie’s old town is flat along the waterfront but climbs steeply inland — the 99 Steps and Blackbeard’s Castle are not accessible. Magens Bay has a paved path to the sand.

Weather and when ships call

Warm and steady, 27–31°C all year. The drier months are December to April. September and October are the peak of hurricane season and the quietest for calls.
