About Freeport
Freeport is the second city of the Bahamas and a very different call from Nassau. The cruise berth is inside a working container and industrial port, so there is nothing to walk to — the day begins with a taxi in a way that Nassau’s does not.
Port Lucaya, about 20 minutes east, is where most passengers head. It is a marina-side marketplace with a beach, bars, a straw market and live music, and it functions as the island’s tourist centre.
Lucayan National Park is the island’s distinctive asset: one of the longest surveyed underwater cave systems in the world, with two caverns open to visitors by boardwalk, plus mangrove creeks and Gold Rock Beach — a very wide, shallow beach that extends dramatically at low tide.
Grand Bahama was hit directly by Hurricane Dorian in 2019, which sat over the island for roughly two days. Recovery has been uneven, and some resorts and facilities that pre-date the storm have not reopened. Cruise infrastructure and the Lucaya district are operating.

How ships berth here
Ships berth at Freeport Harbour, a working industrial and container port. There is a small terminal at the berth, but nothing else within walking distance.
Access and mobility
The berth is step-free but isolated — every plan requires a vehicle. Port Lucaya Marketplace is flat and easy once you are there.
Weather and when ships call
Warmer than Florida but cooler than the Caribbean in winter, 22–27°C in January and 28–32°C in summer. Hurricane season June to November — Grand Bahama was severely damaged by Dorian in 2019 and parts of the island are still recovering.
