About Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik spent centuries as the Republic of Ragusa, an independent maritime state that stayed free by paying tribute to whoever was strongest and by being extremely good at diplomacy. The walls that made that possible are still complete: a 2 km circuit up to 25 metres high, walkable the whole way round.
Walking the walls is the thing to do here and it needs realistic planning. It takes 1.5 to 2 hours, there is no shade, the entry is one-way with limited exits, and in August it is brutally hot. Going first thing, before the ship’s excursions and the day-trippers, transforms it.
The city suffered badly in the 1991–92 siege during the Croatian War of Independence, taking hundreds of direct hits. The restoration was meticulous, and a map near the Pile Gate marks every shell strike — worth a minute, because nothing else in the Old Town suggests it happened.
Since Game of Thrones filmed here Dubrovnik has become extremely crowded, to the point where the city caps the number of cruise passengers ashore per day. That cap is why arrival times are staggered, and why an independent group that leaves early does noticeably better than one that waits.
Going ashore in Dubrovnik
Within reach on foot
- The city walls, a complete 2 km circuit above the rooftops
- Stradun, the polished limestone main street
- The Rector’s Palace and the Franciscan monastery pharmacy, working since 1317
- Banje Beach, just outside the eastern gate
What the port is known for
- The Srđ cable car for the view over the Old Town and the islands
- Lokrum island, a short boat ride offshore
- The Elaphiti Islands by boat
- Ston and its 5 km defensive wall, about 60 km north
How ships berth here
Ships berth at Gruž, the commercial port northwest of the Old Town. It is a walk-off berth, but the Old Town is 2.5 km away — a shuttle, the number 1A/1B bus, or a 30-minute walk along the harbour road.
Access and mobility
Gruž and the shuttle are step-free, and Stradun is flat and smooth. Almost everything off it involves steps — Dubrovnik is built on a slope and the side lanes are stairways. The walls circuit has many steps and no exit points partway round.
Weather and when ships call
Hot and dry in summer, 28–32°C in July and August. The city walls are white limestone in full sun with almost no shade — walking the circuit at midday in August is genuinely punishing.

Ports often paired with Dubrovnik
Itineraries that call here usually call at these too, so it is worth reading them together when you are comparing weeks.
Split
A city built inside a Roman emperor’s retirement palace, with the berth a few minutes’ walk from its walls.
Kotor
A fortified town at the head of a deep winding bay, with the berth directly beneath the walls and a fortress climb above it.
Venice
Still on Adriatic itineraries, but no longer a berth in the city — large ships were barred from the historic basin in 2021 and now use the mainland.
