About St. Kitts

St. Kitts is a small volcanic island whose economy ran on sugar for three centuries and closed its last plantation in 2005. That history is still the dominant feature of the landscape — cane fields gone to scrub, estate chimneys, and a narrow-gauge railway that once hauled the crop and now carries passengers around the island’s edge.

Brimstone Hill Fortress is the island’s set-piece and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a British artillery fortress built by enslaved African labour over roughly a century, sitting 250 metres above the sea with views to Sint Eustatius, Saba and St. Martin on a clear day. The upper works involve a real climb.

The St. Kitts Scenic Railway is the unusual excursion. Double-decker carriages run on the old sugar line around the northern half of the island, with a return leg by coach. For a group with mixed mobility it is one of the few Caribbean excursions where everybody genuinely can take part.

Nevis, the smaller sister island, is a 45-minute ferry from Basseterre. It is quieter still, with Alexander Hamilton’s birthplace, a handful of plantation-inn restaurants and very little cruise traffic.
