Group cruises from San Juan
The Caribbean’s own homeport — sailing from here removes the two-day crossing and adds two or three extra ports to the same week.
What sails from San Juan
Cruise lines
Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Norwegian, Celebrity, Princess
Voyage lengths
7 nights to the Eastern and Southern Caribbean, occasionally 10 or 11 nights
How often
Weekly departures through the winter season, from roughly November to April
Which ships are based here changes from season to season, so treat this as the shape of the deployment rather than a schedule. We do not publish sailing dates or fares — they go out of date faster than a page can be maintained, and we confirm live availability and pricing for your group's dates directly with the line.
Getting to the ship
Nearest airport
Luis Muñoz Marín International (SJU) — About 12 km east, 20–30 minutes
Terminals
Piers 1 to 4 on the Old San Juan waterfront handle most turnarounds and put you inside the historic city. The Pan American piers at Isla Grande, across the bay, are used by some lines and need a taxi into town.
Parking
Limited compared with mainland US ports, since most passengers fly in. Secured lots operate near the Old San Juan piers, and most groups use them only for a few local cars.
Sails to
Eastern Caribbean, Southern Caribbean
Sailing from San Juan
San Juan is the Caribbean’s only major homeport outside the United States mainland, and the arithmetic is the reason to use it. A seven-night Eastern Caribbean week from Florida spends two days crossing open water; the same week from San Juan starts among the islands and reaches five or six ports.
It is also the practical gateway to the Southern Caribbean. Aruba, Curaçao, Barbados and the Windwards are too far from Florida for a standard week, and San Juan is where those itineraries begin.
Because Puerto Rico is a US territory, the friction a foreign homeport introduces mostly disappears. US citizens need no passport, the currency is the dollar, mobile plans work without roaming charges, and flights from the eastern US are domestic.
The one thing to plan carefully is arrival. Every member of a group flies in, and a same-day flight is a genuine risk. Old San Juan has limited hotel rooms inside the city walls, so a group of any size should book that night early or base in Condado.
Moving a group through the port
Airport transfers
Taxis operate fixed zone fares to the cruise piers. Rideshare and private vans run too. Domestic US flights reach San Juan from most eastern hubs with no passport required for US citizens.
Embarkation day
Straightforward, with terminals in the middle of a walkable city. The practical constraint is flight timing — everyone arrives by air, so a night before the sailing is close to essential for a group.
The night before
Old San Juan is the obvious base, within walking distance of the piers, though hotel stock inside the walls is limited and books early. Condado and Isla Verde are beach districts 10 to 20 minutes away with much more capacity.
Driving distance
- Ponce — 1.5 hours
- Fajardo — 1 hour
- Everywhere else on the island — under 2.5 hours
Terminal assignments, parking rates and transfer times change, and embarkation windows are set by the cruise line for each sailing. Treat these as the shape of the day rather than a schedule, and confirm the detail once your sailing is booked.
What to weigh up
Starting here as a group
- Removes the two sea days a Florida departure spends crossing the Caribbean
- A US territory, so US citizens need no passport and the dollar is the currency
- The gateway to Southern Caribbean itineraries that Florida cannot reach in a week
- Everyone flies in — book the night before, and expect Old San Juan hotels to sell out
Where you can sail
San Juan as a port of call
Ships also call here mid-itinerary. That is a different day out, so it has its own guide covering berthing, shore access and what is within walking distance.
Other departure ports
Seattle
The busiest Alaska homeport, running round-trip Inside Passage weeks from a city most of the west coast can reach without a connecting flight.
Vancouver
A downtown cruise terminal under a landmark roof, and the only practical starting point for one-way Gulf of Alaska sailings.
Barcelona
The Mediterranean’s busiest turnaround port, with wide flight connections and a city worth arriving early for.
Civitavecchia
Rome’s turnaround port, about 80 km from the city — the busiest Italian homeport and the one where transfer planning matters most.
Piraeus
The starting point for Greek island itineraries, putting a group among the Cyclades from the first morning rather than after a day at sea.
Los Angeles
The West Coast’s largest cruise homeport, at San Pedro, running Mexican Riviera weeks in winter and repositioning to Alaska for the summer.
Long Beach
Carnival’s West Coast base, in a geodesic dome beside the Queen Mary, running short Baja sailings year-round.
San Diego
A downtown cruise terminal about 5 km from its own airport — the shortest airport transfer of any West Coast homeport.
Miami
PortMiami calls itself the cruise capital of the world, with seven terminals on a single island and the widest choice of ships and itineraries anywhere.
Fort Lauderdale
Port Everglades sits three kilometres from its own airport — the shortest airport-to-ship transfer of any major homeport, which is why groups flying in favour it.
Port Canaveral
Florida’s Space Coast homeport, an hour from Orlando — the obvious choice for a group pairing a cruise with the theme parks.
Galveston
The Gulf Coast’s main homeport, on a barrier island an hour from Houston — the drive-to port for groups across Texas and the central US.
Tampa
A Gulf-side Florida homeport with terminals in the middle of the city, and a height restriction that keeps the largest ships out.
New Orleans
A Mississippi River homeport a short walk from the French Quarter — the one US cruise port where the city itself is the reason to sail from there.
Bridgetown
The Southern Caribbean’s own turnaround port, reaching the Windwards and the ABC islands without a crossing.
Cape Liberty
The New York area’s main cruise terminal, on a former military ocean terminal in Bayonne, with a Statue of Liberty sail-past on the way out.
Baltimore
A Mid-Atlantic drive-to homeport with a single terminal, free of the flight costs a Florida departure adds for a group from the region.
Jacksonville
North Florida’s small homeport on the St. Johns River, running short Bahamas sailings with the easiest embarkation in the state.
